Age before beauty said the devil as he threw his grandmother down the stairs
I had to chuckle when I came across this old German proverb! I used ablack wool from a Victorian mourning cape for the devil and his grandmother and I used a vintage wool that I hand dyed orange for the flames. The background is a wonderful old Victorian paisley shawl, circa late 1800, which I hand quilted and embellished with macasite stars and the “flies.” The printed felt & beaded triangles at the top are from a vintage Indian skirt, and the top piece is an antique embroidered piano shawl that I hand quilted. I hand painted vintage wool and cut it out for the vine’s on either side, and appliquéd them onto a wonderful vintage gold lame, circa 1920. The patchwork squares at the bottom are a Victorian turkeyred wool and a vintage paisley. A Victorian sequined trim from a mourning jacket frame’s the text and I used pieces from an antique Victorian crazy quilt to wrap the dowel Also used- antique silk sari border, antique buttons, vintage cotton print for the binding.
