In Inuit mythology, Adlivun refers to both the spirits of the departed who reside in the underworld, and that underworld itself, located beneath the land and the sea. The souls are purified there, in preparation for the travel to the Land of the Moon, their final destination.
Sedna, the goddess of the marine animals, is the ruler of the land. It is said She imprisons’ the souls of the living as part of the preparation for the next stage of their journey.
I Sedna, dwell beneath the earth & sky,
In the land know as Adlivun.
Here in the underworld the Tarnat and the Tupilak, the souls of the dead, stay with me and prepare for their final journey.
It is in Quidlivun, the land of the moon, where all Soul’s find eternal peace.
