our angie died peacefully in her sleep-taking a nap, surrounded by her family. her death was not unexpected-she was 11 yrs old-way up there for a great dane. when i took her to the vet for her shots last month, after listening to her heart, he tactfully asked if i wanted him to run any tests. my answer was no-angie will let me know when it’s time. her last day was perfect-she was up bright and early with the other dogs for her walk. she ate her breakfast, and being the special girl that she is, i left her inside while i ran errands. (left the other 3 were outside) as i was leaving-i tossed her a rawhide bone. in a split second decision that i will always be thankful for, i took the rawhide bone away and gave her a marrow bone from the freezer (her all time very favorite treat-a dog popscicle).
when i got back i let everyone inside . all 4 girls settled down in the living room-fri is laundry day for dog pillows. ups rang the door about 3-of course the ususal commotion of barking ect. when i closed the door i noticed angie was still asleep-
i am sad-but so thankful that she went peacefully-so well deserved-full of grace and dignity. she was a very special girl-through our tears we will continue to celebrate the wonderful memories she has left us with on this memorial day.

My heart goes out to you and your family. This is indeed such a loss for all. It is such a tender time. Perhaps you can take a little comfort in knowing you gave her a life full of love and caring. She was a gentle soul I think.

thank you-i know that she is in a better place- yet selfishly i miss her. all our danes are rescues- over the 35 + years i’ve been doing this i would guestimate that i know the history of about half of the dogs. oreo, our newest girl, is #14-she is the usual “known history” scenario. people usually give up their danes between 9 months and 3 yrs-the “teenage” years-which can sometimes be a trial.
we got angie when she was 9 months-she had undiagnoided thyroid disease and was skin and bones, but soooooo sweet and mischievious. her owners, a couple of young twentysomething year old kids, loved her,but between the health issues, their hollywood single apt, and her energy they just couldn’t cope. and you’re right, most danes are gentle giants-angie especially so. she was the type of girl where you could introduce anyone -baby bird, human toddler, eldery person in a walker, she rose to all occasions with the grace of a diplomat.
i am a better person for knowing all the animals in my life-past and present-especially angie.

Oh Mavis. You know I have such a special place in my heart for Angie. I loved her instantly when Lulu and I came over for a visit. I’m so moved to hear how peacefully she made her transition. Sounds like it was a perfect last day. Thinking of you and your family ~ love, marisa
