textile nirvana » words http://turkeyred.com/blog Sat, 21 Jan 2012 16:23:06 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.3.1 harpies & skulls http://turkeyred.com/blog/2009/06/02/harpies-skulls/ http://turkeyred.com/blog/2009/06/02/harpies-skulls/#comments Tue, 02 Jun 2009 01:41:24 +0000 turke3 http://turkeyred.com/blog/?p=363 i have been working on a piece for the upcoming folktree gallery’s two by two-  noahs ark show. gail mishkin-the wonderful curator of the folktree gallery invited artists to create pairs of animals (same species), and/or some kind of ark imagery, offering their personal interpretations of the story and the creatures that populate it.  there are only be two of each species in the exhibit-so there will be quite a diverse collection. i love mythology-and of course being the non traditionalist that i am-(plus the fact that gail gives us artistic licence ie:little rules and boundaries) i choose harpies. i choose a wonderful circa 1860 linen to showcase “the girls”. the vine and floral applique is cut from a vintage 1940′s batik-that’s as far as i’ve gotten-still embroidering and appliqueing-ouch!

angie is still very much in our thought’s-i do an altar every year for dia de los muertos at the hollywood forever cemetary. but of course i can’t wait til then-we have a small altar started-will add more as time heals. the lovely mosaic skull is done by  an a oh soooo talented artist friend, mary clark camargo-you can see her work at   http://www.eclecticcactus.com/artgalley/Mary.htm

i’ll close by sharing a story from an aquaintance of mine-we’ll call her”miss b”.  she was a child of “sixties parents” who brought up their children in a most definate alternative lifestyle.  miss b’s mother forbade any celebration of mothers day-sighting it was clearly a hallmark conspiracy.  words of wisdom-true or false?

 a very low point was when a woman dropped one of my new favorite’s, a very

fragile assemblage piece and took off. 

 And I have only one comment on that the promoter advertised “all handmade, no imports”-HA!

ah well-live and learn.  the good news is the assemblage piece can be repaired-thankfully the major damage was to parts that can be replaced. And special thanks to those friends, loyal customers, and acquaintances who braved the hot weather to drop by-you know who you are!

this morning i sent my summer workshop schedule to my fabulous webmistress & fellow artist michelle verbeeck.  i am such a slacker-had i read her current blog-i would have known that she broke her wrist-in not just one but in three places-michelle, i’m soooo sorry.  so i now have put my “little unimportant bad show weekend” gripe away in it’s proper place-at the bottom of the list. thank you michelle for helping me regain perspective. (Visit michelle at http://www.redbird-studio.com/ and view her wonderful work at  http://www.studio-259.com/studioblog1/
